Primula – Irreplaceable Spring Plant

Primula – Irreplaceable Spring Plant

Primula is a large and complex genus, which includes the well-known primroses, contains about 400 species of perennials, some suitable for mixed plantings, others for bedding, while a few are happiest in a rock garden.

The plants that are described here do well in cool, damp atmospheres and moisture-retentive, preferably neutral soil. All have characteristic rosettes of spoon-shaped leaves from which the flowering stems arise. Another characteristic (but not of all) is ‘farina‘, a flour-like bloom on the stems and leaves that can provoke an allergic reaction.

Enjoy Indoor Fish Pond During Winter Months

Indoor Fish Pond – If you’ve never seen an indoor fish pond or are of the mind that the only place for a fishpond is outdoors, it’s time to readjust your thinking. Many people love the idea of having a goldfish or Koi pond in their lawn and garden area but find the reality isn’t always as wonderful as the fantasy.

Every winter runs the risk of losing the plant and fish life in your pond with the first freeze. As a result, more and more people are coming up with a method for bringing the outdoors, in and forming your very own pond indoors is a beautiful alternative to a tired old aquarium. While an indoor pond doesn’t have to be beautiful in order to be functional, you can choose to make it a focal point and conversation piece quite easily.

Container herbs can be planned in three ways: small containers can be devoted to individual herbs – this is very satisfactory for plants such as mint that are very invasive; a large container can be divided up into compartments in imitation of the traditional herb garden; or a number of herbs can be planted together in one container, grouped for color and contrast.

Garden Design For The Climate

Garden Design For The Climate

Garden Design For The Climate – A comfortable garden needs a balance between sun and shade, through the day and through the year, and once you know which way your property faces, you can plan for it quite easily.

We all know that the sun rises in the east, sets in the west and is at its highest at noon, when it’s never quite overhead, but somewhere to the south. This is why the south side of the house gets the sun and the north side is in its own shade for most of the year. But not in summer, because the summer sunrise and sunset are quite a bit to the north of an east-west line.
